BRATs the good people Sunway Pyramid in sprucing up a charitable home.

Chinese New Year is always a joyous occasion, there is no doubt about that. However, it’s not solely about showing off our new clothes or comparing how much ang pow money we receive.
While most of us have a family that we can go home to celebrate the ocassion, there are others who spend the days alone.

Persatuan Rumah Caring Kajang (Caring Home Kajang) in Taman Muhibbah, Kajang, Selangor, is a home for old folks, single parents and orphans, as well as the disabled.
The two-storey home is well-maintained and currently houses 28 senior citizens , with the oldest being 94.

This year, the S.O.S (Some Of uS) team from Sunway Pyramid in Selangor organised a charity campaign to volunteer and help out at Rumah Caring Kajang.

The public, together with the staff and management team of Sunway Pyramid, donated daily provisions such as rice, beverages, toothbrushes, dishwashing liquid, body wash, diapers and more to the residents of the home.

Over 50 volunteers – including BRATs – showed up last Sunday to spruce up the home in anticipation of the upcoming festival season. The volunteers helped clean, paint and refurbish the home.

In addition, the residents were also treated to complimentary haircut and medical check-ups that day.

Keeping up with the festive spirit, the residents also enjoyed “loh sang” sessions during lunch.
Before leaving, the Sunway Pyramid team presented a mock cheque of RM15,000 to the home.

Doing a good deed

According to Wendy Yap, founder of Rumah Caring Kajang, the home is a non-profit organisation licensed by the state of Selangor. Yap has worked as a social worker for over 21 years and has also set up several homes for old folks in various states across the country.

Other than housing seniors, Rumah Caring Kajang also cares for pregnant and single mothers who are in dire need of assistance.

The home offers counseling and assists the mothers in looking for potential couples to adopt their babies as well.

The charitable person had a very wise advice for those with elderly folks: “It is important to honour your parents. They took great care of us when we were young, so it is only right to take good care of them when they are old.”
