No, your truly is not talking about a rocket propelled grenade, but rather, a role-playing game.

In RPGs, players assume the roles of characters, and go on grand adventures, quests and so on. There is also a gamemaster (GM), who controls the settings, tells the story, and guides the players along their adventures and quests.

The GM is pretty much the referee and “the game” – yes, he also dishes out the hurt, by unleashing the baddies, monsters, traps, obstacles and other means of nastyness.

Once a gaming staple back in the 1980s, RPGs have dipped in popularity due to computer gaming, which pretty much took the RPG approach and provided the artificial intelligence replacement for GMs.

But hey, in an age where TCGs (trading card games), boardgames and computer & online games all sit pretty, RPGs are still alive and kicking thanks a handful of game companies.

In a nutshell, RPGs are a lot more flashy and impressive-looking these days – just look at Fantasy Flight Games’ “Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay”. At one glance, you could mistake it for some impressive looking boardgame.

Where to start if you’re interested? The Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Core Set would be the best entry point, according to FFG.

The Player’s Guide would be ideal for any player wanting their own guide book, and covers spells, actions, blessings and special abilities.

The cool accessories and player aids all come in the Player’s Vault. There’s just less stress in covering and tracking all the stats – tokens, cards and other cool accessories are all in it.

The Creature Vault looks like a personal favourite of mine, as this is the one that allows the GMs to dispense all the goodies! Yep, monsters and what-not get delivered in one fine package.
