Well, it’s not often that us KL-ites play host to a world-level games competition. So get ready for one folks, happening this weekend!

Magic: the Gathering’s Grand Prix stops by Cititel Hotel, Mid-Valley City, KL this Friday and Saturday both days of the weekend. Grand Prix events see host to various tournaments and side-events, and this one will be no exception.

The biggest draw will be the combined cash prizes of up to US$30,000, as well as a full-blown Standard format Constructed play tournament.

Now, anyone can sign up and play for this tournament. Yes, no need to have an impressive DCI ranking / umpteen tournament wins – just show up with a legit Standard format deck, register and play. Here’s your chance to line up against an established Magic Pro, mano et mano! (Thanks to Michael Toh for this nugget of info.)

Some of your favourite Magic artists will be at hand to do artist signings.

Magic fans will also be fond to note that the exclusive foil version of Umezawa’s Jitte will also be available in this event. Well, as long as they have stocks!

Well, if you are scratching your head on who Umezawa is, he was actually a cool Legend card that appeared back in the Champions of Kamigawa block, Magic’s Japanese-themed expansion cycle which appeared way back in 2004.

(Check out the cool Wikipedia entry on the plane of Kamigawa here, which has numerous interesting additional links and references.)

Toshiro Umezawa

Suffice to say, it’s darned rare for any internationally-organized and sanctioned Magic event to pop by Malaysia, so see you folks at Mid-Valley City’s Cititel Hotel this Friday and Saturday!

The events will start 12noon on Friday, and 9.30am on both Saturday and Sunday.
