The young photographers who took part in our R.AGE Photowalk at Jalan Sultan in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday went back with so much more than just a bunch of nice photos.

They went home with a greater appreciation for the history behind many of the storied buildings around KL city that we often take for granted, and the importance of preserving them.

For IT executive Teh Hung Wei, 26, it was his first time at Jalan Sultan and he says the buildings reminded him of his hometown, Penang.

“I think KL should do more to preserve these buildings,” he said. “They really reminded me of my childhood. It really made me miss my hometown when I was snapping those pictures.”

Another participant, Eugene Chee, 28, said young photographers should use their skills to help with the preservation effort that’s happening now.

The Star’s Preserve Our Heritage campaign had already played a part in reversing the decision to demolish some of the century-old buildings on Jalan Sultan, and now, they’re hoping to promote it as a heritage site.

“This is my childhood,” said Eugene, referring to the Jalan Sultan area. “I used to come here with my schoolmates from Methodist Boys Secondary School to have wantan mee and loh shu fun. It was crazy that they wanted to demolish the buildings!

“Young photographers can help by sharing pictures of places like Jalan Sultan on social media so people around the world can see. We might not appreciate them so much, but I think foreigners would love it.”

To do our bit to preserve our heritage, here are some of the pictures taken during the photowalk with R.AGE contributor and blogger Jason “Smashpop” Goh and RedFM deejay Jeremy Teo.
