JUNE 16 and 17.

Cheerleaders, mark those dates down in your calendars because that’s when Cheer 2012, the 13th edition of the country’s premiere cheerleading competition, will be happening!

Now that it’s less than two months away, the heat is really on for all the teams that have been training hard all year long for the finals, which will be taking place at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam, Selangor.

CHEER 2011 finals held at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil yesterday. Mickeymitez of SMK Damasara Jaya Champion of Co Ed Division.

Last year’s finals was a truly memorable one, with the competition format cut down to just a single day due to unforeseen circumstances, meaning it was all or nothing for the teams. They only had one chance to pull off the perfect routine.

And that was exactly what the Cyrens from SM Sri Kuala Lumpur did, defending their title in supreme fashion, executing their stunts flawlessly.

History was also made at Cheer 2011 when the Rayvens, the Cyrens’ junior team, came in second, making it the first time we’ve had both winners and runners-up coming from the same school.

The Rayvens made it a one-two finish for SM Sri Kuala Lumpur when they finished second behind their senior sister team, the Cyrens at Cheer 2011.

Both teams will surely be among the top performers this year, as will traditional powerhouses the Titans from SMJK Ave Maria Convent, Ipoh, Perak, last year’s second runners-up.

The Mickeymitez, too, will be determined to defend their Co-Ed title, which was introduced last year.

So for all you cheerleaders who are reading this, and for all the fans of Malaysian secondary school cheerleading out there, it’s time to get ready – because Cheer can only get better this year!
